Easy 5 Step Study Method

Many studies show that students who spend time teaching what they’ve learned demonstrate a better understanding than students who just study. Once a child can teach a concept back to you without any hesitation you can be confident in their mastery of the subject

Our proprietary “Teach and be Taught Method” is something each of our tutors implements with their students to enable maximum academic success.

Here’s how you can use this mastery method when helping your child with homework:

Step 1) Show your child a step-by-step example and explain each step as you write.

Step 2) Give the child a similar problem to your example and verbally walk them through the steps as they write them down. Try this 1-2 times to help them gain the skill while feeling supported.

Step 3) Have them try another similar problem and ask them to speak the steps aloud so that you can interject with any corrections.

Step 4) Once they’ve solved the problem successfully have them walk you through another example. Tell them to act as though they are the teacher and you are the student.

Step 5) While they are “teaching" the concept to you interject their explanation with ”who, what, where, when, why” questions that allow them to evaluate the reasons behind their thinking.

Many children tend to be shy in expressing their specific confusions about a subject. Having your child explain each step of a problem back to you will allow you to see which part of the concept they need to focus on further. By doing this, you can address it on the spot and help them have greater success.
